8 Years of Writing on The Journey of Ichi's Family, What Have I got?

Sweet  memories with Ichi while I was working on something - Photographed by Acik Mardhiyanti

Someone said, "A writer is a poor person and poor job, they can not earn money by writing."  If this sentence is true, why on earth I keep writing? There is no future and no guarantee that I will get lots of money and become rich, but why I insist to write and publish articles and having 4 different blogs? What the reason behind my "stupid" acts?

Actually, I have been writing for 10 years or more (I do not remember the exact time). In fourth grade, I wrote my first school assignment and it was writing a story! Unlike most villagers' children who speak in a local language, my father taught me to speak in Indonesia every day so that I could easily catch up with everything that taught by the teacher in class. At the time many students in the village could not understand the Indonesian language clearly because they used to speak in the local language. Meanwhile, the formal language in school is the Indonesian language. By building strong formal language my father hoped I could easier communicate with children from educated families. But who's know, based on language I could write a story. However, I had some lack on these experiences where no one did not have the ability to teach me. Someday my high school teacher told me, "You know, Acik, your paper has a problem in this part. But you can learn how to write a paper when you study at a university. You will understand what I mean."  At this point, it triggered me more and more to study in university. "I have to make it!"

My first year at a university, it was the fun part when I had to finish at least 3 papers a week and presented them in front of the class. Yeah, choosing a program to study Economics management made me busy by writing papers and presentations every week. Feeling tired and exhausted, of course, but I was excited because I could learn how to write and make a better paper and understood what my high teacher told me. However, after graduating, I hadn't typed again. I left it behind and busy with work life.

After I lost my career path completely, to heal my depression and my broken heart, I learned something else for example learning how to create ribbon flowers and write again. I almost died in 2007; someone tried to brush my existence in this world. In the next year, in 2008, that person tried to destroy me again. Then I completely lost the opportunity to build a bright career in 2008. I planed to build my career from zero and would study again to get a Master's degree which meant before 30 years old I would get my Master's degree and had a bright career. But, all those planed ruined, that's why my heart broke, my dream just burnt like that, and left nothing. While trying to pull up myself together, I started writing in 2010 (or 2009, I do not remember  🙄) by joining a payment blog which means every article I had published, I would receive appreciation. The articles that I wrote mostly about politics. The payment was not much just enough for a phone bill a month, however, I gave it to people who needed it. And I was happy!

While writing, I also was doing a small business in 2010. Unfortunately, I had to stop this business that I planed would succeed in the next 5 years because my business partner took all the money from the sale of my goods. Feeling upset, of course, I had customers and I could see that my business would thrive. But, I needed to leave it behind.  After that happened, I tried to focus on writing.

In 2011, I wrote an article for one of the famous women's magazines in Indonesia. After waited for about 2 months, my article officially published; it was the first time I made publication! I was over the moon even though the money was a little! I wrote an inspiring article based on true events! Why? I just wanted to share a little my story so that could inspire others who had a hard life. In the same year, I joined Citizen media as a part-time writer. Most of my articles were Highlight and got Headlines! Even one of my articles helped "some kind" government organization to get financing; they said because of my article they got a big money.  However, I did not receive any money from the articles that I wrote, neither from this citizen media nor this government organization. Moreover, this government organization copy-pastes my article without acknowledging me as a writer. The worst part was someone stole one of my articles because he wanted to gain popularity instantly. Yes, the article that I wrote was number one on Google search at the time. So, he wanted his blog popular and got many readers by stole my article.

In this citizen media, I wrote many kinds genres, from gardening, traveling, inspired stories, some politics, et cetera. I kept writing because I love writing and I just felt glad if my articles could help others. For example, when I wrote tourist spots that we visited, it means free advertising for this particular place, right? Or writing about Singapore culture, then it would give others a view of what Singapore cultures look like.

Anyway, in 2012, I was thinking to create my own blog and left citizen media where I had joined for about 2 years since 2011. Whether get money or not, I just wanted to become an independent writer by creating my own blog where no one could easily steal or copy-paste my articles. What I had learned when joined that particular citizen media is that I think someone easy to stole the article that published on it because this media could not protect the writer and the articles.

Even if I experienced bad things when joined the citizen media, in 2013, one of the publishers reached me and proposed me to publish a book with them by collaborating with another writer. I rejected that proposal. Why? Because at the same time I wanted to start helping children in the village by giving them books so that they could see another world. Helping children was my priority! It was the time when Ichikraft Give and Care born!

After a proposal from a publisher came to me, this citizen media contacted me to join a talk show on their local Television, a year later they asked me to join a discussion with some of the people who worked for the Indonesian government and another else. All of those works had money, they would pay me! But, I rejected all of those opportunities that could build popularity, my name, and moreover would get money. The reason why I rejected all those offers because I just want to focus on goals, one of these goals is to focus on what I am doing and what I want to be in the future, furthermore, helping villager children even though only some kids! Since I was a child, maybe in fifth grade, every time when I laid down on my bed, my eyes had always been looked throughout far away in the sky and said to myself, "my future is out there, I will get higher education so that I can helping other who need help." Maybe they felt disappointed that I rejected them, but I am not someone who hungry for popularity or fame. Someone said to me, "You should have taken those offers, made "them" shocked and jealous badly!" In this word, "them" means people who had made fun of me because my father was nothing but I wanted to study in a university and have a big dream. Well, I am not some kind that person who does something for other people. What I am doing, all those my hard work, my achievement is for my future. My father wanted me to become an educated person, so I just want to make him proud. That's it!🙂

Ichi was my assistant! - Photographed by Acik Mardhiyanti

One of my blogs is The Journey of Ichi's Family. I changed the title 3 times. But I think the last title will last forever since my beloved cat died last year; Ichi was my cat's name, in Japanese means one. After 8 years of writing on this blog, I just feel grateful because I could share true event stories that could inspire others, or just sharing my experiences for some/ many things like culture, traveling, tutorial, the knowledge that I know, or just simply to keep sweet memories by writing. But not politics articles like before because I have done with political matters. So, this blog is like a "gado-gado" which means no specialty like most blogs that only focus on one field such as fashion or traveling blog. Basically, if someone asks me, "You can cook?", I say "YES!" or "You can sew?" My answer is "YES!" or another question, "You can do gardening?" I said, "Of Course, I can!" or  "You can design handmade flower and cat collar?" my answer is "YES, I am!"  I just love writing!😊

What I have got after 8 years of writing in this blog? Well, there is no money, popularity, which is simply nothing. However, like I mentioned before I feel grateful because writing is means I have always learned some or many things. For instance, when I wrote how to make an Autumn flower, I designed and created it before make it published. Another example, before writing about local (Singapore) culture, it meant I learned it first, understanding how they live, what foods they eat, or their habit. There are so many things that I have been learning since I do writing.

In the past, after losing his decent job, my father became cheaper labor that only earned $ 4 a month for living. It was not enough to buy food for a week, yet my father kept this job even if many people around made fun of him or simply bullied and humiliated him. He kept going and run until someday all of those people shocked because my father sent me out to study at a university.  Then, all those people hate me a lot because their children couldn't surpass my achievement. The bottom line about this story is that having a dream is a must; we have to keep walk even if doing something small and ignore all the noise around. Today is small, but who's know the future, a small thing that we have been doing today will become something big in the future. The future hasn't written yet; we write our own future!🚀😉

I think my father was the biggest influence in my life who tough me to learn many things in this life. Someone said, "Do not say I can't, but have always willing to learn something new." Do not stop learning because the world keeps teaching us every day.

TraceTogether Token Make My Life Easier During Pandemic

My TraceTogether Token - Photographed by Acik Mardhiyanti

What is that thing? Here in Singapore, we call it TraceTogether token that everyone should have to make contact tracing easier in order to control the spread of Coronavirus. For me, personally, it makes my life much easier during the pandemic.

I have been using the TraceTogether token since February 2021 ( I guess). My husband and I visited our Community Club to take our device. When we arrived, there were just some people who come to take the token. After checked in with TraceTogether App and checked the temperature, we were allowed to proceed to the counter. To take this device, we need to bring our IC (Identity Card) because they need to check before giving it to us and write-down our phone number as well.

Behind this token, there is my name and also code that I use to scan when entering a mall, hypermarket, or any public places. We must bring this device every time when we go out. And there is a blinking green light appear wherever we near the other people who bring the same device. If the token has a green light that blinks once every minute, it is working well.  So, with this token is make easy for a government to control the spread of Coronavirus in the community. Once when someone is infected by the Covid-19 virus, then people who near or meet him/ her, will be contacted and placed in quarantine. So, it helps with tracing close contact of confirmed Covid-19 patients so they can be identified and quarantined quickly to limit the spread of the coronavirus in the community.

Before using this token I felt uneasy whenever I went out. I had to hold my phone, open the TraceTogether App, did check-in by scanning the barcode before entering the shop or place that I visited, and must do check-out when out. And sometimes I forgot to check-out and realized it after 1 or 2 hours at home. To be honest, I was stressed with all those things. The worst part was a day before I took some kind of exam my camera phone broke and I panicked. If I could not check-in the building which meant I could not take part in the exam. How frustrated I was at the time. And yes I failed my exam! Lots of anxiety!😢

After encountering some inconvenient situations, I think it is time to take my token when the government announced the distribution of tokens from Monday, 1st February 2021. This smart device is free that the Singapore government distributing since September 14 last year. We can choose whether to use TraceTogether App or TraceTogether token because the TraceTogether token is an alternative for those who prefer not to use a phone. Something that you must know that TraceTogether is mandatory in Singapore to enter public places like restaurants, shopping malls, et cetera. And my decision is TraceTogether token because it makes my move easy during the pandemic. Like I mentioned before I felt stressed when using TraceTogether App🤦‍♀️ With this token, I just bring it whenever I go out without worry about forgetting check-out and the hassle of check-in. You can imagine when I need to visit some shops; check-in & check-out will make me lost my focus on how what I had to buy.

If the token is faulty then we can get a new one by replacing it. For example, when it has a blinking red light or the light has stopped blinking. We can call the hotline or for me, simply visit my Community Club if something happens to my token.

That's my story about my TraceTogether token. I think it is an important tool to help the spread of coronavirus in the community. One of my friends said, "I envy that Singapore is one of the safer places during the pandemic." I said to her that her country could get through the tumultuous situation if everyone works together as a nation, and instead of complaining about government rules or laws, we can do our part for instance put on our mask, bringing sanitizer when going out, wash hand frequently, socially responsible (avoid gathering), stay at home as much as possible which is if you do not have any essential matters like going to work, school, buying groceries or medicine. Even if the daily community case is low; yesterday was zero, we still take precautions measurement. Everyone who breaches the Covid-19 safety measurement will get jail for up to 6 months and a fine of up to $ 10,000.

The Impact of Online Customer Reviews on The Brand's Reputation

Talking about digital marketing, especially in this unprecedented crisis because of the COVID-19 situation will lead shoppers to the online business which is shifting their habit from traditional buyer to online customer. It is essential for them to read reviews before making a decision and trust the brand that will impact the brand's reputation. the impact of online customer review on the brand reputation

Gaining customer's trust is an important part of every business that will open the possibility to turn them into loyal customers. In another word, it will be increasing the level of sales and guide a company to gain business revenue. However, in online businesses, a successful business depends on online user reviews.

Most online shoppers would do a "little" research by googling, or through social media, and even word-of-mouth to collect information as much as they need to make conclusions about the brand. Looking at how another customer as a personal recommendation is a prime step for shoppers to find out not only the product itself but also the virtual store reputation which is put the online customer reviews at the top of the game of online-shop. Positive reviews and at least 4-star will show the brand performance. At this point, the potential customer will trust the business and willing to become loyal customers if they are satisfied with the brand and the services. Because users most likely to do business with "excellent" reviews and do not want to purchase from a business that has negative online reviews. Therefore, there is an important task for the online business to concern about and do not underestimate consumers' voices. If the business has to deal with negative reviews then what would an online business do? First, admit if make a mistake and do not refuse for what customer experiences; second, analyze the problem and solve it by giving the best services next time which is mean that taking shoppers complain to make the brand stronger by the time; third is show what the best from the brand, for example, good quality, quick delivery, special design, consistency, et cetera.

Brand reputation in online business is made up based on customers' experiences on how they feel, hear, think about its business which is collaborated about customer satisfaction. In other words is not only the products must surpass consumers expectation, but also packaging and other services for instance customer services that quickly respond to any question about the brand. Basically, creating positive reviews in digital business is the combination of how the business work; starting from choosing the materials, processing, quality control, packaging, storage and delivery, and customer services. All those elements connected with one another.

What the benefits of getting good reviews for an online business that leads to a good reputation?

  • get the customer's heart which is also known as "trust". When potential customers read positive online reviews about the brand, it leads to purchasing the product and attract loyal customers
  • Increasing business revenue because shoppers decide to buy after seeing other consumer experiences from the reviews they write
  • It guides to outstanding among others, in other word is distinguished from competitors. To achieve a higher level of success, the online business must pay attention to reputation because it is a big deal for any kind of business
  • Getting more customers. Basically, if one consumer is satisfied with the brand, they will recommend the brand to their friend and family which is free advertising and lower marketing costs
We can see that's how the impact of online reviews on the brand reputation opens the door to many opportunities and possibilities. It virtually impossible without a good reputation to achieve success because naturally, customers do not want to pay a lower quality of products or services.

Chinese New Year Celebration During Pandemic in Singapore

Some of Lunar New Year treats from our neighbor - Photographed by Acik Mardhiyanti

Lunar New Year or also known as Chinese New Year is the biggest celebration in Singapore. This year sounds different because of the Covid-19 situation. However, I think people still celebrate it in another way. How does it look like? Are you feeling curious and want to know how locals managed to mark this special occasion? Let's get on it!

We have been staying in Singapore for about 9 years. Since moved to Singapore a few years ago the first thing in my mind was on how to bonding with locals. I wanted to know their daily life, how they eat, habits, and events including Chinese Year New. I think it is my rule that I have to learn culture and tradition wherever I live. With this new knowledges, I hope that I could become a better person and open my horizon.

Talking about the biggest event, Lunar New Year in Singapore, well, there are lots of intriguing things happening, for instance, foods, ceremony, family dinner, and snacks. Simple thing Chinese New Year is the time for a family reunion and sit down together and eat together. Maybe many of you think this festive is only for Buddhists or related to this religion. If I am not wrong, Buddhist is not a religion but guides people on how to live. That what I hear from a friend. Back to the topic, here in Singapore, regardless their religion, everyone who have Chinese root, they celebrate Lunar New Year. For example, my neighbors who are not Buddhist yet still celebrate it. That's what I like about living in Singapore. Living in harmony and respect for each other.

In 2021, due to the coronavirus situation, there are so many rules that we have to adhere to so that we can continue managing the spread of the Covid-19 infection in the community. For example, each household only receives 8 visitors a day. Dining at a restaurant is also allows 8 people except for the same household. But it is merely impossible for one household with 10 residents. Everyone must understand the situation even though the daily new local case of COVID-19 infection is zero. What if someone or a group of people breach management safety? Well, the fine of up to $ 10,000 and 6 months jail will wait for you.

So, what did locals do to celebrate Lunar New Year during the pandemic? Many of them stay at home and cooking at home. My neighbors, for example, just sit tight at home even if they felt a little sad. Cooking at home and having dinner with a family member, their children, and grandkids. If another family would do visit then with the arrangement, 8 people a day. What are locals cooking? When my husband and I went to the hypermarket 2 days before Chinese New Year Eve, most people bought hot pot ingredients such as wong bok (Chinese cabbage), enoki mushroom, meat, fishball, lobsters, et cetera. This indicated that during this festive season makes a hot pot at home is their choice. Besides making a hot pot set menu at home, I think many of them cooking another food based on family culture or tradition, for example, chili crab. Every family has its own tradition that's what I have been believed. So, there is not always a hot pot.

My hot pot style at home - Photographed by Acik Mardhiyanti

What about snacks? Of course, there are abundant snacks and treats during this particular occasion. What I like about Lunar New Year in Singapore is that plenty of snacks, cookies, and sweets, all those treats are special because we can only find them during Lunar New Year. For instance, Chiku chips are also known as arrowhead chips, love letters, durian cookies, larva cheesecakes, pumpkin cake, coffee cookies, bahulu cakes, et cetera, you-name-it. The most popular are pineapples tart and kuih bahulu. Both are traditional ones and I think it must buy them in this special season.

Something that special on Chinese New Year in Singapore, we exchange snacks or gifts with our neighbors. I usually make a goodies package for my neighbors and give it to them before Chinese New Year Eve. My choice is always the same every year; pineapple tart and bahulu cakes, and 2 oranges, including flower brooches or flower accessories in these goodies. These handmade flowers are made by myself. This year I chose pineapple tart, salted egg yam, 2 oranges, and handmade flower accessories. Even though I do not want my neighbor to give me gifts but still they sent some gifts to our doorstep by hanging them. As result, we have lots of snacks and another package at home and we do not know how to eat all of those treats.

Packages for my neighbors - Photographed by Acik Mardhiyanti

That's how locals celebrated Lunar New Year during pandemics, at least in my neighborhood. What I have learned is that maybe it is a different celebration but we feel grateful because we are still in good shape, healthy. Instead of complaining about the government rules, laws, and how strict safe measurement, we, in Singapore, are just grateful for our life. All those laws that government imposes are for safety and the future. We must understand and do our part fight against Covid-19.

By exchanging cakes, or gifts, I think it helps to cheer up our neighbor who celebrate Lunar New Year during the coronavirus year. If you want to know more, I do exchange cakes on Christmas day as well. Not only that, during New Year's eve 2021 one of my neighbors sent me cakes even if I did not send them cakes, what nice and kind neighbors. I love living here!😊 I feel that I just live in kampoeng. "Kampoeng" means village. Then I realize, it does not matters where we live in whether in the city or village, we can still do living in "kampoeng spirit". It means we can manage our relationship with neighbors regardless of race, language, and religion. So, are you staying in Singapore, are you living in "kampoeng spirit", if yes, tell me then  what your experiences😊

Making DIY 4-layer mask with felt as non-woven material

4-layer maks designed by Acik Mardhiyanti - Photographed by Acik Mardhiyanti

The world changes rapidly and so are we. Since the Covid-19 struck our world last year wearing a mask is compulsory which means we have to buy it just like groceries that need them every day. The money will involve and the big question is "how much money do we need to spend on masks?" At this point by making DIY masks becomes popular and trigger many people more creative every day to design DIY mask. On top of that, the biggest question is how to make a proper handmade mask against the Covid-19 virus by using unexpensive material?

4-layer mask designed by Acik Mardhiyanti - Photographed by Acik Mardhiyanti

The first thing that I thought in my mind was how poor families could afford masks. If you are following my Ichikraft Give and Care blog then immediately you know the family who lives in poverty have always been struggling to earn money every day just to provide food. With a wage range between $15 - $ 40 a month, it's virtually impossible to buy masks for their family. Which one they choose, buying masks to protect them or buying foods to fill their stomach? Who will take full responsibility for their real issues?

4-layer mask designed by Acik Mardhiyanti - Photographed by Acik Mardhiyanti

I came out with the idea by using felt as non-woven material to substitute surgical masks. I believe many of you know that surgical mask material is a nonwoven material. Where the idea from? First of all, I would like to say that felt is a common material for my handiwork. Basically, since I have started my business, this material tags along with me which means I used to use it. In January 2020, we had a shortage of masks in the market. Believe me, at that time we couldn't find masks everywhere. Feeling desperate, of course, but it is not my personality if I just give up so easily before finding a solution. The first mask I made was 1-layer masks to cover the mount. The second mask that I made was 4-layer masks with nonwoven and cotton material inside. At this point, I have used felt which I believe do the same work as a surgical mask. However, before decided use felt as a nonwoven material, I did a search by googling what kind of nonwoven material is. That's how I found out and made a decision to create the 4-layer mask by using felt and cotton inside. After almost a year since the second mask I created, I have made my third mask and they are still 4-layer with felt and cotton inside, but in a different design.

4-layer mask designed by Acik Mardhiyanti - Photographed by Acik Mardhiyanti

The cotton inside the mask that I have made is our t-shirt. Well, sometimes we have some clothes that we do not use it anymore. Why do I need to add cotton inside? What I have believed is that more layers are more protection. White cotton is my choice because it won't absorb the heat compared to dark colors, for instance, black, dark blue et cetera.

4-layer mask designed by Acik Mardhiyanti - Photographed by Acik Mardhiyanti

The DIY 4-layer mask that I have made is hand sew. Even if hand sew but still I can produce acceptable masks. I wish I have a sewing machine at home, unfortunately haven't. For me, whether have it or not, I am still capable to create something useful with my hands. Challenging my limit is my motivation that can push my creativity beyond. Well, I could say my work is not bad 😁

4-layer mask designed by Acik Mardhiyanti - Photographed by Acik Mardhiyanti

The front and back layer is pattern fabric, the second layer is felt, the third layer is cotton material. If you are following my article then instantly you know that I have made this kind of mask since March 2020 and it becomes my standard that we can make easy at home and use it to protect us against the Covid-19 virus. Indeed, it just my assumption without any prove properly such as to conduct research, but this kind of mask will useful for people who live in poverty. That's my dedication to finding solutions for poor people in the pandemic situation. Not only them but also for me😊 I am happy that I do not need to spend some money on masks every month. Believe it or not, I haven't used my money to buy masks, not a single one.

4-layer mask designed by Acik Mardhiyanti - Photographed by Acik Mardhiyanti

The vantages about this particular mask are cheaper materials that affordable for poor people, easy to make at home as long have a needle and thread, and washable with distinctive caution because we deal with felt; remember do not wash this mask in the washing machine. After hand washes with detergent, we can soak it into disinfectant. It sounds good, right?

Sometimes we just need to creative and willing to learn something else rather than only complaining about so many things. I think we should thank this unprecedented crisis because we are reborn as a stronger person to get through this situation. Keep your courage, embrace it, we can make it!

Developing marketing strategies by analyzing competitor

I believe many businesses could sometimes don't realize the importance of competitor analysis. We assume that it has nothing to do with the marketing strategy. In fact, every marketer must do an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of potential competitors to develop marketing strategies. The situation will become crucial when we are talking about entering a saturated market. By analyzing competitor puts the business in the next level of marketing and develop new strategies.

A few months ago I discovered a distinctive product that I love it. I found it on social media and decided to get more information about their products by following the update before made a decision to buy it. At first, all products seemed unique and as a potential customer, I could say they are good at this particular business. Everything they put on social media convinces me that I'll grab them soon. But it didn't take long after I saw the disturbing marketing strategy they applied. Immediately  I made up my mind to unfollow and deleted their website and all contacts that were on my phone before. What happened and what is wrong with their strategy?

I was born and grew up in a remote village that most of the villagers worked as farmers. But many of them were also businesses owner and it was small family businesses that passed down from generation to generation. Since 11 years old, I worked in these small industries that thrive around my father's house. What I learned from them was that whatever businesses we are in, it must unique, different, and the most important thing is to go along with the competitors and do not spread hatred. There wasn't surprise, the competitor was not the enemy, instead, they even could work together as a partner and even became a best friend that would help to figure out their specialties, or sharing knowledge; especially when someone new in the same business, many business owners would love to share their proficiency with a newcomer, just asked them nicely. As a result, each product was unique and had its own market. Thus, make competitors walked along and became friends with the brand. That's what I call "healthy business." The big question is how could that happen?

Bringing back my experienced that I talked about early, what happened? The brand created unfair marketing. What does it mean? Do you had ever been read or heard about the "dirty" strategy in marketing? Me, personally, I do not like these acts. I encourage you if you are planning to open a business in a saturated market you would rather do analyze competitors in marketing than playing an unpleasant strategy. For instance, comparing your brand with a competitor brand by taking pictures side by side, using it as your digital marketing branding, uploading it in public, and talking "pussy" about competitor brands for example: "look at this brand X, you can see my brand is the best, their quality is bad, et cetera." Whatever your reason, it is neither a proper nor elegant move. This kind of action will give a bad impression on the customer's eyes. Moreover, it will damage your reputation because customers may think you are not professional; of course, it is an unprofessional business.

So, what should businesses do to develop new marketing strategies based on analyzing competitors?

1.  What kind of business market you are in

You know, right, when you decided to start a business the first thing is what market you are involved in. Good for you if, only IF, your product is unique and no one else produces it. But everything changes when you want to sell something that much likely crowded in the market. What would you do? Here is the key that you must act fast to create a new strategy.

For instance, to understand how a new act will develop; let say you want to sell chips, it could be banana chips. There are abundant chips in the market, then what should you do? You can offer special chips with unique flavors; maybe banana chips with cheese or chocolate flavor. It sounds great and a better move to make your business different from others.

In this case, thinking out of the box will help to figure out what kind of business we are involved in. By offering something exciting for customers to try will put the business surpass their rivals in the market.

2. Who are your competitor

I know, might feel uncomfortable when talking about who is a business rival. Examining the competitors will lead a business to get an opportunity that might be unseen before. Instead of copying the competitor's strategy, a business must step forward and grab the chance. You have to make your own path rather than following the rival moves.

I remember when someday we visited a tiny town. I saw lots of diners offering the same menu; it was meatball soup with the same style. I could say they opened a business by following the existing market. Indeed, entering business must consider what a high demand that easy to make some profit. But, don't you think that business competition will be increasingly fierce? What should a business do?

If that happens to you as a newcomer in a saturated market, you can take a competitive advantage which means you can outperform your rivals in the same business. How to do that? First, you can offer a low price to the customers; or secondly, give the clients good quality products and services.

3. Who are the customers

When you decided to build a business, first; considering what market will you enter, right? If you can determine it then it should easy to know your potential customers and what they expect from the products.

Let's say your business is healthy products, it could be healthy snacks or organic foods. I am sure you can picture what kind of clients or consumers that will approach. If there is a 10 % market for vegan customers this is your chance to impress and make them your loyal customers.

4. What are the strengths

Talking about the key of business strengths which means we are speaking about price, consumers, or it could be services that related with the products. What make it is special and different from others that will effect marketing strategic. Using what the best products have to promote or advertise that will attract petential customers. Do not compare your products with other when promote your products that only make bad reputation. For instance, taking competitor's product picture and use it for your advertising by place it side by side with your products. Be careful, this is not professional moves.

In my view, the best marketing is that when we can show to the consumers what we are the best at; maybe a product with a good quality and lower price, or a product with a good quality and same price as competitors but offer 1 years or 2 years guarantee or give them discount or free side items.

For example: a brand new computer who want to enter market. What the new brand can offer to the potential customer in a saturated computer market? Giving the competitive price is one of the answer. But how to make a profit if the price is lower that the rivals. Here is the answer; selling computer accessories that buyer can't resist to buy when they buy the product ( a new brand computer). In this case, offer cheaper price is the product strength, and develop new strategic by selling computer accessories.

There are 4 ways to develop marketing strategies by analyzing competitor. By determining what business that we are involved, who are the compettitor is, what kind of customer we will face, and what the strenghts product have to surpass customer. All of those strategies will lead developing marketing strategic to outperform its competitor.

How Culture Can Impact Marketing Strategic?

Businesses that want to enter a new market must do analyze customer behavior to understanding them and make a decision on what is marketing strategy that able to meet buyers. In what I've believed that culture plays important role in how businesses will be successful. Answering the question of how culture can impact marketing strategy,  understanding strategic glocalization will give the business a golden opportunity in a new environment.

We can not treat the customers in the same way especially if you want to sell the product in different regions or even globally. Understanding local will give us some sort of view on what customer thinks, acts, behave on the product they consume. The decision that they make is based on culture. This is where a marketer should work; knitting opportunity on how to create a product that aligns with the culture. With this particular product, it most likely acceptable in the market.

Sometimes, or many times, businesses fail to identify culture as an issue because they mostly focus on getting profit and thrive without realizing what they dealing with those processes. I agree that looking into deep about the people such as how they live, what food they like, their jobs, etc, is not easy, but all of them are the key to know them better because they are potential customers. What I've seen in this case that sometimes businesses overconfident to invade the market. As a result, they are unsuccessful to surpass the market. Maybe you have read or heard that Dunkin' Donuts failed in India, Starbucks not succeed in Australia, and also 7-Eleven collapsed in Indonesia; how that happened?  The answer is that culture affects customer's decisions. If the product does not meet what they desire, your business will break down easily.

Now, what is a marketing strategy that will lead businesses to resound in a distinctive market? Talking about it maybe some of you have ever heard this strategy called glocalization. Glocalization is a combination word of "globalization", and "localization. In short words, for easier understanding, it means think global, act locally which is that the products sell or distribute across the region/ world, but adapting the local market. Together with culture, local identity, and knowledge, will create a product accepted by consumers. Yet, the brand still exists with its standardization that comes along as a company when entering the marketplace such as; it could be the logo and employee uniform.

For example, KFC Indonesia offers not only fried chicken but also rice for the package. Rice is a part of Indonesian culture; eating for breakfast, lunch, dinner, must with rice. In Malaysia, in a special event, McDonald's has a menu called Nasi Lemak McD. Maybe you are wondering since when McDonald's and KFC offers rice on their menu. That's how they did to engaging with the customers. If both of them doesn't aware and ignore the culture where the products will be sold as a result in just a short time they will fall through.

In 2018, I wrote a paper, a study case on this particular strategy marketing. Maybe I will post it on my blog later. For me, glocalization is a unique way of how the marketer approaches potential customers. I think businesses that want to expand their market should learn and take this as a prime issue because culture can impact marketing strategy.
